Martin Laird Wins Las Vegas Trophy
Martin Laird prevailed in a three-way play-off to claim his first ever PGA Tour win at the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open.
Laird moved into a play-off with George McNeill and Chad Campbell after the trio finished the final round locked together on 19 under par, and it was the Scot, having earlier shot a final-round 68, who prevailed on the third extra hole.
Campbell was eliminated from the play-off when he missed a short par putt at the 17th, leaving McNeill and Laird to duke it out on the 18th.
McNeill spurned a chance to claim victory when he missed a 20-foot birdie putt on the 17th, and the American struggled again on 18, just missing the water on his approach before two-putting for a bogey.
Laird saw his approach stop 11 feet from the hole, and the 26-year-old from Glasgow held his nerve with two putts for par as he became the sixth first-time Tour winner to win the event at TPC Summerlin in the last six years.
Despite having never won on the PGA Tour prior to this weekend, Laird revealed he had not been plagued by doubts over the final round.
"The most nervous I was was the first few holes starting out, and then coming in there I was amazed how calm I was coming down the stretch," said Laird, whose win earned him $462,000 and a two-your tour exemption.
"I had two great shots on 17, and I was determined not to let a good swing cost me the tournament on bogey, and obviously making the putt on 18 was big."
Campbell and McNeill settled for a share of second place while three-time Las Vegas winner Jim Furyk was left to rue a damaging two-over-par 73 on the third round which badly hindered his charge.
Furyk stormed back with a nine-under 62 over the final round on Sunday but missed out on the play-off by one stoke and was forced to settle for a tie for fourth with Jeff Klauk on 18 under.
Charley Hoffman was next on 17 under after four steady rounds while Rickie Fowler, playing in his first PGA Tour event, was among seven players tied on 16 under.
